Edith Wharton is also a good author from that time period. She wrote Ethan Frome and another book that was made into a movie, but I can't remember it for the life of me.

I love the Cherry Ames books, but the original ones are best, and they're hard to find, except on ebay. They're kind of like Nancy Drew books, except Cherry and her friends are nurses--working in every nursing field imaginable.
I also love the Patricia St.John books, only in the original form. She's British and her last name is supposed to be pronounced "sinjun", but the more recent editions have been Americanized, which can't possibly have the same precious flow as the original editions with all the British idioms.
They're written for grade school and junior high people, but I still enjoy them. She took most of the characters and situations from her own childhood, and they all contain some kind of mystery.
One of her books was made into a movie--"Treasures in the Snow".
